Rental market in Berlin "massive"

Buy-to-let investors from the UK may be wise to look towards Berlin as their next spot for buying property, an expert has claimed.

Andrew Goldthorpe, agent co-ordinator for property investment company David Stanley Redfern, said that the Berlin market is "very, very busy" for UK buy-to-let investment.

The reason for this interest is that property is affordable and there is a large market for rentals, he explained.

"You can still pick things up over in Berlin for under 35,000 euros," he said, adding that "80 per cent of the property" is comprised of rentals.

However, Mr Goldthorpe cautioned that the "extremely cheap" properties that are currently found in Berlin "can't stay at those prices" for long.

Meanwhile, Deborah Fox from property investment consultancy Emerging Real Estate commented that the buying process for those looking to capitalise on Berlin's opportunities is "straightforward".

"There aren't really any pitfalls in the buying process but there is a lot of paperwork and it is important to use the services of a local independent lawyer," she added.

Berlin is the second most populous city in the European Union.

German holidays in bloom

The beauty of Germany's gardens are on display for almost six months this year, from April 27th to October 14th.

Visitors on German holidays may want to stop by Thuringia, which is hosting the BUGA (Bundesgartenschau, or Federal Garden Show) during this period. This is the first time ever that the BUGA is taking place in a federal state.

The horticultural exhibition will be held in two neighbouring towns, Gera and Ronneburg. Gera will offer the Royal Meadow Park show, while Ronneburg's exhibit is themed New Landscape.

A total of 171 days of floral displays, gardens and landscapes will be on show, as well as music dance, opera and operetta.

The 300,000-square-metre Royal Meadow Park display is made up of an iris garden, a historical villa and a flower hall.

Meanwhile, New Landscape is built on part of a former ore mine and offers 450,000 square metres of scented herb fields, meadows, roses, prairie bush and a large tree garden.

Located in central Germany, the free state of Thuringia has 2.33 million people living it it.

The capital, Erfurt, has an intact medieval city centre which may be of interest to families on German holidays. Two distinctive churches, which are the emblem of the city, are open to the public.
